NSF Representatives Visit IMCP

Professor Huang Tai-Yin, director of the atmospheric science program at the National Science Foundation (NSF), and Ms. Zhang Nianhua, science assistant at the U.S. Embassy in China, visited the International Meridian Circle Program (IMCP) on the morning of Sept. 6, 2024. Participants included Prof. Li Hui, Prof. Xu Jiyao from the Key Laboratory of Solar Activity and Space Weather of NSSC, Director Ren Liwen from the IMCP Office, and Prof. Yue Xin’an from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS.

This visit aimed to further understand the progress and cooperation opportunities of the Chinese Meridian Project (CMP) and the IMCP. The Chinese representatives introduced the progress and future development plans of the CMP and the IMCP, as well as the construction and operation of the Sanya Incoherent Scatter Radar.

Both parties had a thorough exchange on the prospects of Sino-American cooperation in the field of the IMCP. The IMCP representative stated that American scientists and research institutions have always been important participants and contributors to the IMCP. In the future, Chinese partner hope to further strengthen cooperation with American partners under the framework of the IMCP with the support of the NSF. The NSF representative agreed and supported this, expressing hope that both sides will work hard to promote further consultations at the national science foundation’s level in both countries. Through the cooperation of Chinese and American scientists in the field of the IMCP, it will make greater contributions to global space weather science research.
